The Gupta Group

The Gupta Group that has made the recent transition to residential condo development, but their pristine reputation as a hotel developer and manager ensures their success in this new endeavour. The Gupta Group is led by Dr. Steve Gupta. As one of the most influential men in the industry, his self proclamation that he’s an entrepreneur may seem a little frivolous, but as an immigrant from India, Gupta has built his own legacy and has truly realized the Canadian Dream.

He immigrated to Canada with his wife, Rashmi in 1973. Although he spoke excellent English and had a good education, it is always difficult to transition to a new country when you have little money and no contacts.

The first job he had when he landed in the country was as an insurance salesman. Without the luxury of leads, Steve needed to go door to door in neighbourhoods and apartment high-rises to try and sell his wares. He did this until 1978, at which time he had saved enough money to invest in a truck stop in Port Hope, Ontario. He was able to revitalize the truckstop and was so successful, that by the early 1980’s he was buying up the very apartment buildings at which he was peddling insurance. This story is not only inspirational, but it proves that Gupta has had a long history in investing in homes.

Dr. Gupta began his hotel enterprise in 1997 when he acquired an old RCMP building at the enviable location of Dundas and Jarvis in the heart of Toronto. This was only the beginning, as his foray into the hospitality industry is where Steve made his reputation as a preeminent businessman, and he eventually expanded his holdings by building hotels in Toronto, Montreal, Sudbury, and Peterborough. Dr. Gupta has since become an extremely decorated man as he’s been able to win multiple awards, such as the 2009 Marriott Outstanding Contribution Award, the 2009 Hilton Developer of the Year Award, and was the first Canadian and person of South Asian descent to win the prestigious Marriott Horizon Partnership Circle Award.
